The lineage of the Tai Situpa's is traced to one of the chief disciples of the Gotama Buddha, the Bodhisattva Maitreya. The title Tai Situ was given in China by the Ming Emperor Yung Lo in 1407.
The current and 12th Tai Situpa was born in 1954 in Eastern Tibet to a farming family by the name of Liu.
He was recognized by the 16th Karmapa and escorted to his monastic seat - Palpung Monastery at the age of 18 months to be enthroned there by the Karmapa according to tradition.
Later he stayed one year in Tsurphu Monastery, and at the age of five he left Tibet for Buthan, where the king Jigme Dorje and the Queen Mother had been disciples of the previous Situpa - Pema Wangchok.
He then went to Sikkim to Rumtek Monastery, where he received his formal religious training under the gui-
dance of the 16th Karmapa.
At the age of 22 he assumed responsibility for founding his own monastic seat in Himachal Pradesh in North-
ern India called Sherap Ling Monastery.
He made his first trip to the West in 1981, when he taught in Samye Ling in Scotland.
His last visit to Denmark was in 1995, when he was invited by Karmapa Trust. |
